CORESTA is an association founded in 1956, ruled by French law, the purpose being to promote international cooperation in scientific research relative to tobacco.
Its membership was 24 upon foundation, 117 in 1976 and currently amounts to 189 full members.
Full members are Organisations (Companies and Research Institutes) having R&D activities related to tobacco, whether in the plant field (agronomy, breeding, phytopathology) or in the fields of manufacturing, chemistry, metrology, or materials (cigarette paper and filters).
The present 189 full members originate from 48 countries. Their geographical spread is as follows :
CORESTA organizes yearly meetings in which scientific papers are presented, as well as reports and results of studies and surveys.
The Scientific Commission is in charge of orientating and coordinating the scientific work according to the objectives and priorities given by the Board. It is composed mainly of the gathering of the Study Groups Executive Committees.
There are four Study Groups:
Each member-organisation may designate an official delegate to each of these Groups, which meet every year for the presentation of scientific papers and reports, election of the Executive Committee (every other year), and the organisation of collaborative work which is implemented within smaller units called sub-groups or task forces.
Meetings
CORESTA holds Congresses every other year (even years). The whole association is invited to participate in them, and a General Assembly is held during each Congress. This is also the occasion for the awarding of a CORESTA Prize to a recognised scientist in recognition of his/her contribution to tobacco science, and of Study Grants to encourage young tobacco scientists.
On odd years, two Study Groups meetings are held, one for the Agronomy and Phytopathology Groups and one for the Smoke and Technology Groups.
The main bodies of CORESTA are the General Assembly, the Board, comprising 14 member organisations, the Scientific Commission, comprising twenty persons, and the Study Groups.
A General Secretariat, based in Paris, is in charge of the smooth running of the association and of the documentation.
The official language of CORESTA is English.
Admission as a member of CORESTA is dependent on approval by the Board.
Any requests for further information should be addressed to the CORESTA Secretariat (see Contacts).
