The Smoke Science Study Group is concerned with the scientific study of smoke and smoking behaviour. This includes development of specific analytical methods for mainstream, sidestream and environmental tobacco smoke; and chemical and biological investigations of smoke properties, smoking behaviour and smoke exposure.
The Smoke Science Study Group comprises the following Sub-Groups and Task Forces:
· Sub-Group Smoking Behaviour (1996)
Objectives:
To critique and review published papers on all aspects of smoking behaviour, and publish the critical reviews in peer-reviewed journals.
To examine unpublished reports and work on the subject within member organisations, with a view to recommending publication in peer-reviewed journals.
To identify gaps in total information and suggest suitable work to provide the information (standardisation of filter methodologies).
· Sub-Group Special Analytes (1999)
Objective:
To propose practical and robust recommended methods for smoke analytes as agreed by the Scientific Commission. Currently, selected volatiles and carbonyls are being studied due to their prioritisation by TobReg.
· Task Force In Vitro Toxicity Testing of Tobacco Smoke (2002)
Objective:
To conduct a proficiency testing programme to evaluate cigarette smoke using a common experimental protocol and the Task Force's recommended test battery.
· Sub-Group Biomarkers (2009)
Objective:
To review present knowledge of tobacco and smoking-related biomarkers of exposure and effect.
To undertake ring trials / proficiency tests for selected biomarkers as agreed by the Scientific Commission.
To source and develop reference materials to support biomarker analysis for those biomarkers selected for ring trials and proficiency tests.
