2021 Collaborative Study for the Determination of Tobacco-Specific Nitrosamines in E-Liquids

EVAP Technical Report

November 2022 Ref. EVAP-304-1-CTR

Following a survey of its members analytical capabilities pertaining to the analysis of tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) that indicated a high amount of overlap between sample extraction and mode of analysis, the CORESTA E-Vapour (EVAP) Sub-Group approved the initiation of a collaborative study for the determination of TSNAs in e-liquid products. The compounds included 4-(methylnitrosoamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), and N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the repeatability and reproducibility (r & R) values of the methodology and propose a new CORESTA Recommended Method (CRM).

This report outlines the results from the collaborative study. The outcome of the collaborative study supported the publication of a CORESTA Recommended Method for the analysis of TSNAs in e-liquids.
