The moisture content, nicotine, pH, free nicotine, and 4 tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs) in 65 samples of foreign oral smokeless tobacco products were analyzed with CORESTA recommended methods. The results showed that there was wide discrepancy among these samples; moisture content and pH ranged from 12.07% to 55.58% and 5.55 to 8.98, respectively; on the basis of total wet weight, the contents of nicotine and free nicotine were in the range of 5.41-27.68 and 0.63-10.46 mg/g, respectively; the release rate of free nicotine was 7.8%-72.3%; the total content of 4 TSNAs was 0.54-31.91 μg/g, the contents of NNN, NNK, NAT, and NAB were 0.31-17.00, 0.07-6.00, 0.11-6.51, and 0.01-2.54 μg/g, respectively.
