Aphid control in tobacco by imidacloprid in transplanting water

CHRYSSOCHOOU A.P.
Tobacco Institute, Drama, Greece
Field trials on Oriental and Virginia tobacco for the control of the tobacco aphid ( Myzus nicotianae Black) by several rates of imidacloprid (confidor 200SL, Bayer) through transplanting water treatments (TWT) were conducted in several tobacco localities in Greece in 1995. Some satisfactory results for the aphid control by imidacloprid TWT applications on Oriental aromatic tobacco were obtained in 1989. The interest of such an application of imidacloprid was renewed nowadays. Confidor 200 SL has been registered for foliar sprays in tobacco in Greece since 1993 and it is widely and successfully used by tobacco farmers. Two or three sprays only are recommended for whole tobacco season. Here, the results of several rates of imidacloprid TWT applications in comparison with the controls are presented. The very high effectiveness of some rates lasts more than two months. There is evidence that imidacloprid in TWT also gives satisfactory control of wireworms. It is also of low toxicity, well tolerated by tobacco plants and it acts more friendly to the environment.
