Conservation and development of Indonesian tobacco

A diallel crossing for Besuki cigar tobacco cultivars indicated a significant difference variance of GCA in all of the characteristics studies. In H 343 and H 892 which were among the seven cultivars studied, the GCA and SCA effects were positive. The cross between them possessed a greater number of leaves, longer plant maturity and a better leaf index than did the parents. This F1 was released as Besuki Hybrid 12. Bulk selection was made of the progenies and yielded the Besuki JR-3 cultivar. This is among the highest yielding cultivars of Indonesian cigar tobacco. Another type of Indonesian tobacco is the Kasturi cultivar for domestic consumption, in which there is seed impurity. Through mass selection we were able to obtain a population type, which was better than the original one.
