The 14 rare-earth elements (REEs, or lanthanides) from lanthanum (atomic mass 139) to lutetium (atomic mass 175) in five cigarettes and five tobacco leaves were determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A microwave sample dissolution technique using HNO3 and H2O2 in ICP-MS analysis was used. The total REE amounts of five cigarettes: Hongtashan, Yunyan, Shilin, Hudiequan, and Huayuan were 2318.4, 2802.9, 4431.9, 2758.1, and 3617.7 ppb respectively, and those of five tobacco leaves Y1, A1, A2, B1, and B2 were 897.2, 426.6, 788.6, 871.3, and 934.9 ppb respectively. The repeatabilities were better than ± 3% (n=3) of the relative standard deviation (RSD). The results obtained in this work are satisfactory.
