We have recently developed a web-based TSWV and vector management decision aid for tobacco that is based on recently developed models that predict the timing and magnitude of tobacco thrips (Frankliniella fusca) dispersal during spring. This decision aid will provide tobacco growers with the information needed to make informed decisions regarding the treatment options available for TSWV management for the upcoming year. Website development was conducted in collaboration with the North Carolina State Climate Office (NCSCO). The resulting tool allows growers to input field location (zip code, street address, or geographic coordinates), anticipated transplant date, greenhouse treatment plans, and historic TSWV losses for individual fields. The resulting output predicts, based on weather data, the timing of the 3rd and 4thgeneration thrips flights in relation to the grower supplied transplant date. Current efforts are focusing on expanding this system to use weather-based predictions of the timing and magnitude of tobacco thrips flights in combination with the information described above and information on the residual activity of imidacloprid and cibenzolar-S-methyl to predict the relative potential for significant TSWV spread to tobacco. We anticipate that we will be conducting beta testing in winter 2010 and that selected growers will test the tool in spring 2010.
