Aroma constituents are an important index of cigarette quality. In this paper, the semi-volatile constituents in cut tobacco of nine commercial blended type cigarettes were investigated using simultaneous distillation-extraction, capillary GC with FID/NPD, and GC/MS. The isolation and identification of 132 semi-volatile constituents, which included 37 basic constituents, 83 neutral constituents and 12 acidic constituents, were reported. The contents of 18 important basic aroma constituents, 47 neutral aroma constituents and 12 acidic constituents were determined quantitatively by an internal standard method and the differences between domestic (4 brands) and foreign blended type (5 brands) cigarettes were compared. The semi-volatile constituents were also determined and compared. The repeatability and recovery of this method are given. The results showed: 1) that the average total content of neutral constituents in foreign blended type cigarettes was higher than that in domestic blended type cigarettes, 2) the average total content of acidic constituents in foreign blended type cigarettes was lower than that in domestic blended type cigarettes, 3) the average total content of basic constituents (nicotine free) in foreign blended type cigarettes was 2.2 times higher than in domestic blended type cigarettes.
