The public, industry and governments alike are showing ever increasing concern about the extent and effect of industrial pollutants on the environment. Atmospheric emissions, by the tobacco industry, of noise and dust have been the subject of investigation by a CORESTA Task Force. Based on the activities of the Task Force a review will be given which will include : a collation of the legislative limits, for the countries represented on the Task Force, on the emissions of noise and dust.; a description of the different measurement techniques for noise and dust with emphasis on the reference methods proposed for the isokinetic sampling procedures for dust monitoring.; details of the measurement principles of continuous emission monitor (CEMs) for dust, namely cross-stack optical systems, triboelectric probes and beta-attenuation monitors. Data will be presented that resulted from a preliminary investigation into the accuracy and range of application of CEMs for tobacco dust along with early operating experience with factory CEMs. Potential suppliers of CEMs for dust will be identified.
