In order to investigate the relationships between cigarette materials and chemical components in mainstream cigarette smoke, the effects of grammage and air permeability of cigarette paper, air permeability of tipping paper and plug wrapper, and draw resistance of filter on the deliveries of tar, nicotine, and CO in mainstream smoke of Virginia type cigarettes were studied, and the mathematical models for predicting the deliveries of tar, nicotine and CO in mainstream smoke on the basis of material parameters were established. The results showed that: 1) The delivery of carbon monoxide in mainstream smoke increased with the increase of cigarette paper grammage. 2) The deliveries of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in mainstream smoke reduced with the increase of air permeability of cigarette paper. 3) The deliveries of tar and nicotine in the smoke reduced with the increase of draw resistance of filter. 4) The deliveries of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in the smoke decreased obviously with the increase of air permeability of tipping paper. 5) The deliveries of tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in the smoke reduced with the increase of air permeability of plug wrapper, the reduction extent related with the air permeability of tipping paper. 6) The predicted values by the models basically agreed with the determined values.
