Evaluation of different pesticides against broomrape (Orobanche ramosa L.) in the field

VASILAKAKIS C.
Tobacco Institute, Drama, Greece
In the years 1989, 1990, 1991 and 1992, eleven (11) different agrochemicals were tested against broomrape (Orobanche ramosa L.) in the field, at Drama. The tobacco varieties used were KP14/a (in 1989, 1991 and 1992) and KP S-2 (in 1990). Methyl bromide gave excellent protection against broomrape, greatest yield (except in 1989) and height and zero phytotoxicity. The nicotine was rather influenced, whereas the total nitrogen and the total sugars were negligible (except in 1992) and fairly decreased, respectively. Squadron (imazaquin 3.3% + Pendimethalin 24% EC), 200 and 175 cc/1000 m2, one spray on the soil at little time before transplanting, gave very good protection and yields. The chemical constituents were fairly influenced. Scepter 150 LC (imazaquin 15%), two and three foliage sprays, Squadron 150 cc/1000 m2 and Squadron + Scepter 150 LC provided good to very good protection and very good yields (except in 1991). The chemical constituents were influenced. Scepter 150 LC 1.5% + Stomp SC 30% (imazaquin 1.5% + pendimethalin 30% SC), one spray on the soil at little time before transplanting, Herbolex 36 SL (glyphosate 36%), two foliage sprays, and Squadron + Roundup gave good protection and very good yields. Roundup (glyphosate 36%), two and three foliage sprays, provided enough good results. The nicotine and the total sugars were increased, whereas the total nitrogen was decreased. Glean (chlorsulfuron 75%), Granstar (sulfmethmeton methyl) and Paarlan (isopropalin) were not satisfactory.
