'Habana Vuelta Arriba' a new dark air-cured variety for tobacco production in Central and Eastern Cuba

Instituto de Investigaciones de Tabaco, San Antonio de los Banos, La Habana, Cuba.
In Cuba, tobacco blue-mold caused by Peronospora tabacina Adam has now become endemic. Therefore we had to develop genetic improvement programs for disease resistant varieties. The "Habana Vuelta Arriba" variety was obtained under one of these programs initiated at the Tobacco Research Institute of Cuba. This variety was obtained from the cross between variety "Corojo" and "GA-955", an Australian blue-mold resistant variety. It is highly resistant to blue-mold, black shank ( Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae ), and to tobacco mosaic virus (TMV); it has also some resistance to Rhizoctonia solani , a fungus causing severe damage in tobacco fields. Habana Vuelta Arriba yielded about 3200 kg/ha, with 18-20 usable leaves of a uniform technical maturity, allowing for harvesting them as "mancuernas" (pieces of stalk with two or three leaves), an novel tobacco production in Central and Eastern Cuba.
