Flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors is a new kind of variety developed in our country, which possesses the agronomy properties in flue-cured tobacco and the similar aroma characters in oriental tobacco. It can emit pleasant aroma from leaves directly or when burning. In order to find out its main aroma compounds, in this research, the aroma and flavor constituents in flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors, Oriental tobacco and flue-cured tobacco were identified and analyzed by using simultaneous distillation and extraction equipment and GC/MS. The result shows that, as far as the quality and the quantity are concerned, great differences exist between flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors and Oriental tobacco in terms of constituents, while there are relatively small differences between two types of flue-cured tobacco. Flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors has the special components of 1-penten-3-ol, 1-pentanol, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone; and has the constituents of 2-pentenal, dodecanal, 2-nonenal, nonanoic acid, 4a,5,6,6a-Tetrahydro-1H-Naphtho[2,1-b]pyran, which are also detected in Oriental tobacco; 2,4-heptadienal, benzaldehyde, benzeneacetaldehyde, damascenone , which are determined in three types of tobacco, are most abundant in flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors. It has been reported that the above constituents of flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors, differing from flue-cured tobacco, entail typical aroma property and have good effects on tobacco aroma. Therefore, these constituents may form the basis for the special aroma property of flue-cured tobacco with special aromas and flavors.
