M. javanica rootknot resistant lines have been produced in Zimbabwe. These lines derive their resistance from N. tabacum and an American cultivar, S.C. 72, which is resistant to M. incognita. These lines are coded STNC and are from the double cross (S2 ST x NC 89) x (S2 ST x TB 22) ) and are in the S7 generation. TB 22 is a breeding line with a single dominant gene for white mould (Erysiphe cichoracearum) resistance obtained from N. tomentosiformis. These STNC lines have been crossed to Kutsaga 51E, Kutsaga E1 and Speight G28, to improve quality and yield. Their rootknot resistance is high. Results and slides will be shown of rootknot resistance, breeding material and agronomic results. Resistance has also been derived from N. repanda and N. longiflora and used in a cross with Kutsaga 110.
