In consideration of the energy balance of fuels available in Poland, new bulk-curing barn constructions have been developed, especially for flue-cured tobaccos. In 1980-1981, two types of barns were constructed and tested : The ST-2a barn, characterized by the capacity of its curing chamber to hold about 2 tons of green weight of leaves and the ST-6a barn, whose curing chamber holds about 6 tons of green weight of leaves. In both barns, heaters for solid fuel were used. Actual research work was carried out on the introduction of an automatic control of the heating medium, which could possibly permit the use of a block system of several barns or tens of barns.
