New, fully automatic smoking machine conforming to ISO 3308

KLUSS B.
Heinr. Borgwaldt Technik GmbH, Hamburg, Germany
After ISO 3308 and ISO 4387 were revised in 1991, the idea of a fully automatic Smoking Machine was again taken up. A concept was drawn up in co-operation with the cigarette industry to act as the basis for the development. Here, special emphasis was placed on the application of the new air flow conditions. With the Smoking Machines previously available, the maintenance of these conditions caused continual problems. By applying the most modern technology, a machine has been developed which carries out 10 smoking runs fully automatically. The machine is of a compact design and contains all the equipment required for carrying out smoking runs right through to the analysis scales. In addition some control functions have been incorporated. The savings in laboratory personnel and the high degree of reproducibility are the most significant advantages with this machine. The initial experience with the new machine is now available, not only from the quality control but also from the R&D sector. Numerous series of experiments have been carried out using the prototype with the German Monitor Cigarette being smoked. In particular, the effect of the ambient airflow conditions and the butt-length detection have been investigated.
