The improvement of the chemical and industrial quality of Virginia tobacco in Romania represents the main objective for those involved in tobacco research, production and industrialization. The most important way to achieve this objective is the change of the cultivars structure by releasing and promoting in production new Virginia tobacco cultivars of higher quality. Following the intraspecific hybridization and repeated selection using as parents the best foreign cultivars, the Romanian tobacco cultivar - Virginia 177 was released, having the following characteristics. Morphological characteristics: The shape of the plant is conical, with vigorous stem, of pale green color, with an average height of 170 - 200 cms and short internodes. The average number of leaver per plant is of 28 - 30, with the maximum length of 60 - 65 cms; Physiological characteristics: The vegetation period from transplantation to fully flowering is of 78 - 80 days, the cultivar being resistant to virosis (TMV and PVY); Quality and yield characteristics: The industrial quality of the cured tobacco is very good, reaching at 80 - 83 % for the first two classes of quality and below 4 % tobacco of the third grade, by the Romanian quality scale. The yield capacity of the cultivar is average, reaching to 2,000 - 2,500 kgs of cured tobacco; Chemical and technological characteristics: The chemical composition of the cured leaves is well balanced, specific to the Virginia type; the content of nicotine ranges from 1.8 to 2.2 %, the level of the soluble sugars is from 17.5 to 20.5 % and the content of proteins is ranging from 5.2 to 5.8 %. When cured, the tobacco leaves are uniform, from golden yellow to orange, the foliar tissue being elastic and silky. The aroma is well expressed typical for Virginia tobacco. The content of polyphenols ranges from 4.5 to 5.0 %.In 2004, the cultivar Virginia 177 was listed in the Official Catalogue of the Cultivars and Hybrids in Romania.
