Nicotiana velutina as a source of cytoplasmic male sterility in N. tabacum

We have obtained a completely sterile hybrid from the combination Nicotiana velutina x N. tabacum, whose sterility was overcome through tissue cultures. BC1 and BC2 with N. Tabacum were male sterile. BC1 was morphologically uniform with a characteristic degeneration of the stamen. A desintegration according to the basic morphological indication in BC2 was observed, as well as 11 types of flower changes. In both backcross progenies (2n=32-56) mixoploidy was established. The appearance and stabilization of the cytoplasmic male sterility in nuclear cytoplasmic interrelations between N. tabacum and N. velutina is discussed.
