Reducing TSNAs in cigarette smoke by spindle β-FeOOH

In order to decrease the deliveries of NNN and NNK in cigarette smoke, a hydrolyzate of FeCl3 in the mixture of ethanol and water was characterized by FE-SEM, TEM, BET and XRD. The NNN and NNK contents in the smoke of cigarette samples added with the hydrolyzate to tobacco rod or simulated filter were analyzed. The results showed that the hydrolyzate was identified as spindle β-FeOOH with specific surface of 152.28 m2/g and average size of 6.45 nm. Comparing with the control, the contents of NNN and NNK in smoke of tobacco rod containing spindle β-FeOOH decreased by 25.4% to 55.3% and 36.2% to 59.6%, respectively; in the case of simulated filter device added with the hydrolyzate, the contents of NNN and NNK decreased by about 20% and 40%, respectively.
