Study of cytoplasmic sterile male hybrids (CMS)-cytoplasm derived from Nicotiana goodspeedii

The aim of our research was the creation of cytoplasmic male hybrids (cytoplasm derived from N. goodspeedii. Sterile male lines with) sterile male cytoplasm from N. goodspeedii were used on the one hand on the other, the French varieties BB30 and PBD6, Bulgarian varieties Virginia 276 and Virginia 385 and German varieties Virginia D and Delgat. The hybrids obtained were studied with regard to their morphological and chemical characteristics, yield and resistance to economic diseases of tobacco in Bulgaria and in France. We obtained cytoplasmic male sterile hybrids of N. goodspeedii of the Virginia and Burley type. The cytoplasm of N. goodspeedi had no negative impact on the morphological, biological or chemical characteristics of the hybrids. The CMS Virginia and Burley hybrids demonstrated the heterosis effect with regard to yield and profitability per hectare. Some hybrids possess resistance towards mildew and virus Y. The CMS hybrids are of obvious value for the growing and selection of tobacco in France and in Bulgaria.
