The surface chemistry of the CORESTA blue mold collection

SEVERSON R.
USDA-ARS, Athens, GA, USA
Nine tobacco types, Bel 61-10, Bergerac, Chem Mut, GA955, R x T, Samsun, Trumpf, Pobeda 2 and Oven 62, were grown under flue-cured tobacco conditions at the University of Georgia Coastal Plain Experiment Station, Tifton, GA. Cuticular extracts of the green leaf of each type were obtained and analyzed. All produce alpha- & beta-4,8,13-duvatriene-1,3-diols. GA 955, R x T and Trumpf also produced labdane diterpenes, cis-abienol and labda-13-ene-8 alpha-15-diol. Sucrose esters (SE) containing beta-methylvaleric acid moieties were found on Bergerac, GA 955, Samsun, Trumpf, and Pobeda. Levels of the cuticular chemicals and composition of the SE acid moieties from each tobacco will be discussed.
