Tobacco pest control : health rules and analytical problems in Italy

GRISOLIA M.
Monopoli di Stato, Roma, Italy.
Many EC directives cover the use and control of the recommended agrochemicals applied to protect crops. After a short review of the updated Italian regulations, which have been issued in response to the EC directive and specifically refer to tobacco and tobacco products, the problems related to the control of the pesticide residues in tobacco are pointed out and discussed. The great number of agrochemicals registered and approved for the use on tobacco, as well as their relevant maximum residue limits provided for, impose to perform strict controls in order to check the compliance with the allowed residue contents in the case of any tobacco, both domestic and imported, used for cigarette manufacturing. The feasibility of control procedures in relation to the manufacturing requirements is considered. Particularly, the priorities which have to be observed in verifying the compliance with the maximum limits allowed, the advisability of applying proper sampling procedures as well as the use of both suitable and specific analytical methods are discussed. The need for developing simple and fast procedures, which enable to reliably determine multiresidues from tobacco pest controllers, is stressed.
