The Committee on Health Effects and Patterns of Use of Premium Cigars of the Health and Medicine Division of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), USA, is conducting a study to evaluate the available evidence of the health effects and patterns of use related to the use of premium cigars and identify future federally funded research needs.

A presentation "Introduction to CORESTA Work Related to Premium Cigars" was made by Thomas Lindegaard (Scandinavian Tobacco Group), Coordinator of the CORESTA Cigar Smoking Methods Sub-Group, at a meeting of the Committee on 23 April 2021 to inform them about CORESTA’s work with premium cigars.

Presentation at the FDA Center for Tobacco Products (CTP) - 2 October 2019

Taking advantage of CORESTA participation at the FDA Standards Day in Washington on 2 October (below), the Center for Tobacco Products invited CORESTA to present its activities at a formal meeting on its premises. Stéphane Colard, designate Secretary General, Lea Scott and Rob Stevens, respectively President and Vice-President of the Scientific Commission presented, accompanied with Mike Ogden and Eduardo Berea, representing the CORESTA Board. Around 70 CTP staff attended the meeting, either onsite or online. The presentation was followed by an intense question and answer session.

CORESTA invited to the FDA Standards Day - 2 October 2019

On 2 October, the FDA organised an internal Standards Day aimed at "bringing together Standards Development Organizations with FDA researchers and liaisons to collaborate and share ideas". CORESTA was invited and participated in this event. Two posters were displayed, presenting the CORESTA vision with the structure of the working groups, and the method development process with the list of CORESTA Recommended Methods (CRMs) that served as a basis for ISO Standards. The full list of CRMs was made available to the visitors, as well as the newly produced CORESTA brochure.

Poster Presentation at University of Kentucky Burley Tobacco Tour - 13 August 2019

The CORESTA Residue Field Trial (RFT) programme was launched in view of defining Guidance Residue Levels (GRLs) for newly developed Crop Protection Agents (CPAs). The University of Kentucky being one among numerous contributors of this worldwide programme, its Burley Tobacco Tour, held on 13 August 2019, was an opportunity, by means of posters, to present and explain the RFT programme in the context of CORESTA and its activities.

12th European Pesticide Residue Workshop (EPRW 2018) - Munich, Germany - 22-25 May 2018

Masahiro Miyoshi (JT Inc. and Coordinator CORESTA Agrochemical Analysis Sub-Group) presented a poster entitled "CORESTA Agrochemical Analysis Sub-Group" that gave an overview of Sub-Group's activities, which include conducting proficiency testing and creating technical documents for pesticide residue analysis on tobacco. The EPRW is held every two years as an open forum, with around 500 participants from private laboratories, food and environment control agencies, research institutes, universities, food and beverage companies and agrochemical industry, for discussion about the latest concepts and developments in the field of pesticide residues in food, drink and environmental samples.

 

2018 Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA 2018) Meeting - University of Delaware, Newark, DE, U.S.A. - 2-4 May 2018

Presentation "Historical Use of Genetic Toxicology Data for Tobacco Product Stewardship" by Kei Yoshino, Coordinator of the IVT SG at the 2018 GTA Meeting.  Along the same lines as the presentation made in November 2017 at the ICEM-ACEM Conference, CORESTA was once again afforded the opportunity to present its work on in vitro science.

12th International Conference and 5th Asian Congress on Environmental Mutagens (ICEM-ACEM 2017) - Incheon, South Korea - 12-16 November 2017

CORESTA had the opportunity to show the scientific activities of its In Vitro Toxicity Testing Sub-Group (IVT SG) at the above conference. The IVT SG activities (establishments, inter-laboratory proficiency studies, in vitro whole smoke) were presented by Kei Yoshino, Coordinator of the IVT SG, in his presentation "Historical Use of Genetic Toxicology Data for Tobacco Product Stewardship" at one of the symposiums entitled “Overview of the Application of Genetic Toxicology to International Tobacco Product Regulation” chaired by Martha Moore (Ramboll Environ, USA; Member of the US Environmental Mutagen and Genomics Society and the United Kingdom Environmental Mutagen Society). This gave CORESTA the chance to provide visibility to its global scientific work at an event where in vitro science was discussed.

Tobacco Merchants Association (TMA) 102nd Annual Meeting & Conference - Chantilly, VA, USA - 10-12 May 2017

The TMA organised their 102nd Annual Meeting & Conference with the theme "Understanding, Navigating & Embracing Change", to capture the spirit of the times and explore overlapping needs of all stakeholders.

Dr Rob Stevens, Director of Product Science at ITG Brands, was invited to participate in a panel entitled "Testing Methodologies for Deemed Products." The session focussed on how companies develop and apply testing methodologies necessary in nicotine regulatory science, and the role industry should play in advancing state of the art of testing methodologies.

Invited by TMA for his scientific expertise, Rob Stevens, as Secretary of the Smoke Science Study Group within the CORESTA Scientific Commission, took opportunity of the event to present a few slides about CORESTA activities and achievements and emphasise "the good work done in terms of testing methodologies."

 

Tobacco Product Analysis Technology Summit 2016 - Research Triangle Park, NC, USA - 25-27 July 2016

On 25-27 July 2016, Waters Corporation and RTI International collaboratively hosted the 2016 Tobacco Product Analysis Technology Summit. The purpose of the summit was to bring together industry thought leaders to share their perspectives on analytical challenges and technology gaps in tobacco product analysis. One of the invited speakers, Dr. Jason Flora (Altria Client Services, LLC, and Coordinator of the CORESTA Cigarette Variability Task Force (CVAR TF)), shared background on CORESTA and details regarding the Task Force with a presentation entitled "Cigarette Variability Task Force: CVAR".
