Determination of citrate and acetate in cigarette paper using a enzymatic method

Routine methods for the determination of combustion salts added to cigarette paper are in general non-specific. BOEHRINGER Mannheim has developed enzymatic methods for the determination of various constituants in food products. We applied those methods to the analysis of citrate and acetate in cigarette paper. In this paper will be presented the theoretical basis of the method which involves an NAD-->NADH reaction that can be followed by spectrophotometry. The extraction technique will be described and the reproductibility of the determination will be presented. A correlation between this new specific method for citrate and acetate in cigarette paper and the routine method used for quality control in the factory will be presented. The high level of correlation which is observed demonstrates that the routine method, while non-specific allows, a precise control of the level of combustion salt retroduced in cigarette paper during its manufacture. In conclusion, the enzymatic method for citrate or acetate determination in cigarette paper can be considered as simple, and reproducible, its only drawback being the cost of the reagents.
