The quantities of condensate produced by the main types of tobacco were determined; an attempt was also made to use these determinations to standardize a rapid method of obtaining a"crude condensate index". The methods used involved pyrolysis of tobacco powder. The condensate content of the following varieties (which are listed in order of their content) ranges from 65.8 to 92.5 mg dry condensate/g tobacco : Burley, Virginia, Kentucky, Xanthy and Perustitza. The condensate content varies from one stalk position to another from 53.7 to 109 mg. A negative correlation was found between ash and condensate contents and a positive correlation (= 5%) found between the condensate of the smoke and the crude pyrolysis condensate.
