Experiments on some tobacco types showed good potential for cultivar identification by isozyme analysis. Information for sun-cured types is not yet available. Plants from 22 cultivars of sun-cured tobacco belonging to the types Perustitza, Xanthy, and Erzegovina were grown in greenhouse. Leaf samples were collected at the fifth leaf stage and isozyme separations were performed using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis for peroxidase, malate dehydrogenase, and esterase. Identified bands for each enzyme, combined over cultivars, were 10, 19 and 10, respectively. Cluster analysis was applied to band positions and intensities to trace cultivar relationships.
