The trials were carried out in the experimental fields of the Tobacco Institute of Scafati with six nematicides. The products were tested at two different doses in four replications on 52 plots of 16 m2, each containing 40 plants of tobacco Burley"C 103"resistant to bluemold in order to avoid the treatments with dithiocarbamates. On the fifteenth of May only one preplanting treatment with the nematicides was done at the following rates, (a.i. kg/ha) : _ Fosthiene (LC) : 2, 4 and 3,4 _ Fosthiene (G) : 2, 4 and 3,4 _ Etroprophos (LC) : 8 and 12 _ Phenamiphos (G) : 30 and 50 _ Dichloropropane-dichlopropene (F) : 300 and 600 _ Dichloro-diisopropyl ether (G) : 45 and 75. After harvesting, at the end of August, 20 tobacco plants for each plot were examined to control the degree of attack of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp) according to the Ritter scale, ranging from 0 to 5 and based on the number and on the diameter of the galls. A good protection of tobacco plants from rootknot nematode was obtained in all treated plots, particularly in these with Phenamiphos, Dichloropropane-dichloropropene, Fosthiene and Ethoprophos. Yield of cured tobacco was lower in the untreated control than in treated ones.
