The development of american type blended cigarettes requires not only the selection of the right tobacco in a balanced blend but also the prudent application of modern technology. Two main factors, safety and economics, determine the ultimate utilization of tobacco and technology. The United States"smoking and health program"was directed towards the development of less harmful cigarettes. The cigarette industry recognized the necessity of using the right tobacco and technology in making (new generation) cigarettes that satisfy both quality as related to acceptability and usability as related to safety due consideration was given to the qualitative characteristics of the (tar) components as well as the quantitative aspects of the (tar) per se, this effort resulted in a gradual reduction of (tar) in existing cigarette brands and introduction of new brands with low (tar) and nicotine in the mainstream smoke. The everrising cost of both money and raw material has also necessitated the introduction of new manufacturing techniques especially in leaf processing, additives, paper, filter and pyrolysis. A step by step methodology for burley treatment casing, flavoring and improvement is discussed in details. It is concluded that flavor technology of blended cigarettes is largely influenced by the know-how with respect to the burley portion and its treatment. Some of these techniques are outlined in this presentation, but more emphasis is given to the burley processing operation.
