Fungus diseases plaguing Polish tobacco

ROMAN T.
An alarming increase in fungus diseases has been observed in Poland over the last few years. Extensive research has been carried out to ascertain the type of fungi causing the damage (Botrytis cinerea, Rhizoctonia solani) and to determine which varieties and wild tobacco species are resistant to infestation. Of 60 tested plants, four cultivated varieties showed only small necroses on the stem and four wild tobacco species (Nicotiana rotundifolia, N. nudicaulis, N. langsdorffii, N. knightiana) showed no sign of infestation at all. These will now be used to breed resistant varieties.
