Investigation of the polycarbonic acid contents in tobacco

GRABULOSKI T.
Tobacco Institute, Prilep, Macedonia.
A gas chromatographic method was used for determination of the polycarbonic acids (oxalic, malonic, malic and citric acid) from tobacco produced in Yugoslavia. Acids were esterified with 10% sulphuric acid in absolute methanol, and methyl esters of the polycarbonic acids were extracted with chloroform, then chromatographed on the PERKIN ELMER gaschromatograph, model 2930, with a flame-ionization detector. Results were obtained for the polycarbonic acid contents in the Yugoslav tobacco varieties : Prilep, Yaka, Otlja, Virginia and Burley. It was stated that the oxalic acid content ranges between 1.00-2.63%, the malonic acid between 0.16-0.50%, the malic acid between 1.70-5.63% and the citric acid between 1.25-7.25%, depending on tobacco variety.
