Management of inspection equipment at British American Tobacco Germany

During the implementation of the Integrated Management System (certified according ISO 9000 since 1996, according ISO 14000 since 2000), British American Tobacco Germany has optimized its management process of inspection equipment. At the beginning, only the master data of test equipment were kept on a certified database (Test Equipment Administration [TEA]). Other required records like calibration data, adjustments, locations were kept in paperfiles. Meanwhile most of the laboratory inspection equipment has been fitted out with an additional software (developed by BATG) which not only allows to store measured data directly into a factory database or into the database of a LIMS. It also has the capability either to reject any measurements if the calibration intervall is exceeded or to send calibration and/or modification data directly into the TEA data base. The status and error messages of the inspection equipment, placed on the factory-floor, are recorded and monitored via a software package developed within BATG. This software not only monitors the messages via the internal network on selected screens, but also communicates with the internal pager and cellular phone system, so that each inspection equipment, which is connected to this system, is enabled to initiate an automatic service request by transmitting it's ID, location and the type of error, which reduces the expenditure for service and increases the availability of the equipment enormously. Additional implemented "Servicescreens" into the software of the test stations allow the maintenance experts to enter directly information/results of each activity which has been carried out at each individual system. These messages are recorded automatically and are evaluated continually. The benefits of these automatic managements procedures are: -Cost and time reduction for recording; -Very high availability of the inspection equipment.
