In Italy Burley tobacco for the most part is grown in Campania, on loose soils of volcanic origin. A part of this production, about 15 million kilos a year (the total output is 50 million kilos) is harvested in inner areas of the district on clayey soils. The products of the two tobacco areas in Campania reflect the different climatic and soil conditions and the different agrotechnical methods. Burley tobacco grown in the first area seems to present a better suitability for use in manufactured forms. In the last few years ATI S.P.A. made experiments in the inner areas to ensure development of a more typical product. The experiments consisted in growing two types of plant, in using for each one different fertilizations, transplanting each one into different soils at different spacing, topping higher and lower, harvesting and curing single leaves and the whole plant. Real possibilities of obtaining a superior quality product are foreseen, without considerable changes in growing methods or in yields. Data concerning agronomic and chemical researches will be presented.
