The increased international demand for Oriental tobacco and the industrial conditions of its production require the creation of new varieties of exportable quality. The purpose of our programme was to select and introduce in the production new varieties of Oriental tobacco derived from the famous varieties Harmanli and Kroumovgrad, that would meet the requirements of the dealers and the interests of the producers. The methods used were inter-variety hybridization and continuous individual selection. Results: three new varieties of Oriental tobacco were created, "Harmanli 43", "Kroumovgrad 68M" and "Kroumovgrad 78C", with the following improvements compared to varieties Harmanli and Kroumovgrad:A) Biological characteristics: 1) drought-resistance; 2) resistance against lodging; 3) resistance against premature flowering, overripping and burning the leaves; 4) field resistance to Peronospora tabacina Adam and Erysiphe cichoracearum D.C.B) Morphological characteristics: 1) high number of leaves: 38-40; 2) small dimension of leaves: lower leaves - 18-20 cm/10-12 cm; middle leaves - 21-23 cm/12-14 cm; upper leaves - 12-14 cm/7-9 cm.C) Economic considerations: 1) high quality of the raw material, with 35-45% of the crop classed as first grade, according to the Bulgarian State Standard and only 4-6% as third grade; 2) high productivity: 2200-2400 kg/ha average yield. D) Chemical properties and usability: 1) well balanced chemical composition, nicotine 1.5-1.8%; carbohydrates 13-15%; albumen nitrogen 6-8%; 2) cures to uniform golden to orange colour, with a gentle, elastic and full of matter texture; typical smell for varieties Harmanli and Kroumovgrad; 3) excellent smoking properties specific for the varieties of Harmanli and Kroumovgrad. The good qualitative and quantitative properties of the new varieties raised the interest of dealers and producers from other countries.
