Quality mapping

This paper considers the concept of a map linking quality factors between the initial tobacco receipt to a factory and manufactured cigarettes. The factory is split into process stages and the factors influencing the quality translation across each stage are outlined. The object is to enable a framework for a process overview from which the build up of final quality can be related to the interactive effects of tobacco-equipment-process management. The example used is that of end loss and small tobacco particles. However given the availability of base data similar maps, for other quality factors, can be derived. However it is likely that the routine methods used to measure and monitor performance do not lead to useful maps. This of itself brings into question the relevancy and effectiveness of some established quality assurance procedures and may well lead to the review and simplification of such procedures.
