The float system with trays represents a key-link in a technological process for the reduction of labor, with almost complete mechanization of operations, such as filling the trays with nutritive substrate, mechanical sowing of the trays with special sowing machines, clipping the seedling with mechanical devices. The Central Research Station for Tobacco Growing and Industrialization owns a die for making the trays with 170 cells, by injection with polystyrene. With this die, a tray can be produced in 45 seconds, having the sizes of 52 x 33 x 6 cm and an approximate cell volume of 30 cm3. At 5 trays/m2, the density of the seedlings is 850 plantlets/m2. The sowing of the trays is made mechanically, with an automatic machine SEM - 100, of Italian production, built for trays with 10 cells on a row and having a productivity of 60-70 trays sown per hour. The researches were conducted at the Experimental Field for Tobacco - Voicesti, county Valeca, in pools arranged in greenhouses covered with polyethylene sheet, in 1997-1999. At first, the tests concerned the composition of the hydroponic solution and the nutritive substrate in the trays. It was proven that quality peat 100% is the best nutritive substrate, because it is not lost from the cells, there is a fast emergence and a fast rate of growth of the seedling, it has a high nutritive value and a proper ratio water: air in the substrate. For the hydroponic solution the optimal pH was shown to be 6.0-6.2 and the content of the basic elements (per m2 of pool) as follows: Enide 50 WP,1-2 grams; Ridomil, 2 grams; Previcur, 1 ml; Revital, 1-2 grams; Pirimor, 2 grams and complex fertilizers (N:P:K) of type 25:10:10 or 15:15:15 in a dose of 100 grams. The depth of the water is around 15 cm. In 1999 we studied the influence of the number of clippings and the efficiency of producing tobacco seedling by using the mechanical sowing of the trays followed by direct transplantation from the trays. The float system with trays proved to be a viable alternative system also for Oriental tobacco, able to be used in the conditions of a concentration of the production in compact plots and when mechanization is largely used from sowing to transplantation.
