SENKUS M.; SUWITA A.; WIDJAJA S.
P.T. Djarum Jakarta, Indonesia
Geographical distribution, methods of curing, pertinent chemical analytical data and distinguishing physical features of typical Indonesian cigarette tobaccos, such as Madura, Temanggung, Weleri, Muntilan, Mranggen, Kasturi and flue-cured will be reported. Also the significant chemical analytical data of cigarette smoke of the tobaccos and the burning properties which are routinely reported will be given from these studies. Indonesian clove cigarettes,"Kreteks", normally contain by weight a blend of 60-70% of Indonesian tobaccos and 30-40% of cloves. Some analytical data will be presented for smoke of cloves and also for smoke of a typical tobacco blend admixed with varying amounts of cloves. Filter"Kreteks"are growing in popularity. Chemical analytical data and some physical and burning properties will be presented for a typical"Kretek"blend in a non-filter version, a low efficiency filter version and a high efficiency filter version. Comparison will be made with c orresponding non-clove cigarette versions. Last there will be a discussion of certain physical and chemical properties of two key constituents of"Kretek"smoke, namely Caryophyllene and Eugenol, to estimate their distribution between the particulate and vapor phases. The resulting data will be offered as a possible explanation for the unique smoking quality of"Kreteks".
