An objective of the Iranian Tobacco Company is to investigate the use of tobacco in the manufacture of cellulosic materials. Consequently, quantities of dried stems from available varieties of tobacco that are cultivated in North West Iran have been gathered for this purpose. Sufficient quantities of stems from Burley, Virginia, Tikolak and Basma tobaccos have been collected and dried in bulk in the same processing centre. Following discussion with Tabriz matches and the Neopan Board-producing plant, the stems were used in the board-producing process. The positive and negative aspects of using tobacco stems in the process were investigated. The quality of board produced is similar to that produced during the normal production of the pressed-fines board from the Neopan factory. Various technical aspects of the board have been assessed and detailed results will be presented
