Tobacco grower education programs conducted in Georgia

MOORE J.M.
University of Georgia, Dept. of Crop & Soil Sciences, Tifton, GA, USA
A continuing program of grower education is critically important to insure that grower management of the crop results in the highest quality leaf in the world. In Georgia, it is the University of Georgia which conducts such a program utilizing a system of university extension specialists to train agents in each county as the local representative of the university who in turn assists with the education of local growers. A number of methods are used in a variety of programs to provide educational information to growers. A number of these programs and educational documents will be described along with their role in the continuing education process. Programs to be included are: county agent training updates, grower educational meetings, intensive tobacco schools, study tours, leadership development and grower recognition programs, on-farm demonstrations, research and demonstration reports and annual production guides.
