The purpose of an interlaboratory proficiency testing scheme is to provide participating laboratories with an objective means of assessing and demonstrating the reliability of the data they are producing, and is an important component of any laboratory quality assurance scheme.

Five filter types and five cigarette brands were selected to cover the range of interest for Individual Weight, Circumference, Pressure Drop and Ventilation. Participating laboratories were instructed to measure a sub-group of 10 specimens under their normal operating conditions, repeated three times for each sample.
